For 17 years, Tom Harten has been a teacher with the CHESPAX environmental education program in southern Maryland. Authentic research projects and environmental action have been central to the success of this program where K-12 students use the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding watershed as an outdoor learning laboratory.

Simone Welch can't imagine living life without science. Growing up with a father who was a coral reef ecologist, she has traveled to many islands and coasts while he conducted his research. After graduating from George Washington University with a bachelor's degree in journalism, Ms. Welch worked in journalism for National Public Radio and National Geographic. Simone reported from aboard the USCGC Healy in the Bering Sea April 4-May 11, 2009.
Deanna Wheeler lives in rural part of Charles County within an hour drive of our nation’s capitol, along the banks of the Potomac. Passionate about land and water, Ms. Wheeler is inspired to make sure that “no child is left inside.” Hands on, real science is her priority. From hatching, raising, and releasing yellow perch and horseshoe crabs to participating in a pilot sturgeon project, her students discover how connected they are to the world around them.
