The study area spans the southeastern shelf in two general areas:
Most cruises start and end in Unalaska-Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands. "Dutch" is a major jumping-off point for fishing and research activities in the Bering Sea.
Arctic Ship Coordination during IPY is an initiative to facilitate optimal use of ships and other platforms to meet the scientific goals for Arctic Ocean studies during the International Polar Year. The Coordinators have plans for all ships participating in IPY activities so cruise planners can interact.
